UTI is an Urinary Tract Infection which is affecting 10 million women in India. If not taken proper precautions,it can increase. So how one can prevent it & be safe ? Does using public toilet can give you this infection ? Keep reading !

Urinary tract is composed of four parts that grasp urine all day long, all your life. The kidneys, the ureters (tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder), the urethra (that carries urine out from the bladder) and the bladder itself. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract — the bladder and the urethra.

Why women are more suffered from UTI ?

Women are more prone to UTIs because of the anatomy (  women have shorter urethra- which allow bacteria quick access to the bladder )

Is it true that you can get UTI  from a public toilet ?

There are many factors which can cause UTI & a public toilet can cause infection, though its not a significant threat, because that’s just germ phobic. However, an infection can find various way to reach out. On dirty toilets, the water splash may contract bacterium called the Escherichia Coli or E Coli  which is often present.

One can also contract infection through the tissue papers as it comes in contact with uncleaned water. Also, there are many people esp women who avoid using dirty toilets. But avoiding it is not the solution because if you retain the urine for a long time it can lead to UTIs, burning urinary tract problems and kidney stones.

So what can be done ? How to avoid Urinary tract infection?

– It is important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

Emptying your bladder regularly and fully can help prevent bacteria from building up in the urinary tract.

-Good hygiene practices, such as wiping from front to back after using the toilet, can also reduce the risk of UTIs.

Urinating after intercourse can help flush out any bacteria that may have entered the urinary tract.

Avoid holding in your urine for long periods and try to wear breathable cotton underwear to promote proper airflow.

-Lastly, consuming cranberry juice or supplements may help prevent UTIs by altering the bacteria in the urinary tract.
